Brief History

Port Henderson Primary School is the oldest school in Portmore.  It was established in 1890 and is currently 130 years old.  It was started by the Roman Catholic Jesuits Priest in the latter part of the 19th century on the return of the Catholics in Jamaica.  The first location of the school was at the Port Henderson Beach (the area which is called 'back road' leading to and from the causeway).

In 1951 after Hurricane Charley struck, the school was removed to the foot of the Hellshire hills after it was blown down by the hurricane.  After enjoying the quiet and conducive atmosphere of the Port Henderson sea breeze, and the shelter from the hills for a quarter of a century, it was once again moving time for the Port Henderson School family, as a mining of the quarry warranted a removal.  The constant blasting of the rock posed hazard to the lives of the students and teachers.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education decided to remove the school from that site and bring it to the present site (the corner of Port Henderson and Germaine Road) in Bridgeport.  West Indies Home Contractors donated lands to the Ministry of Education, and in 1971 a new one room building was built to accommodate 150 students.  As the years roll by the numbers grew and an additional building was erected to accommodate 100 students. Since then there has been constant growth, and the school has been changed from a all day All Age School to a shift Primary School.
